Though technically not skin cancer, many see it as such and avoid people with the skin condition known as psoriasis, a viral infection that attacks the body’s skin cells resulting in pronounced flaking and redness. Researchers in Switzerland have found that a specific protein found on our skin called SRF is present at lower levels in areas that are afflicted by the disease. Such a discovery may hold the key to finding better cures for sufferers of the skin condition that till now has taken years to cure. The role of SRF in the many other skin diseases are also being looked at, even in skin cancer where the skin cells DNA have mutated into different forms.
Much still has to be done to discover the magic-bullet that would allow doctors to cure skin cancer that is considered to be one of the biggest killer diseases of all time. On the other hand, a surprisingly benign plant may hold the key to better skin care products, the lowly milkweed. The plant has been found to have all the necessary compounds that makes it an ideal for protection from the sun and it also conditions the skin making it soft and suple. Such new breakthroughs are allowing us to get better options on the store shelves as we strive to protect ouselves from the harmful rays of the sun.
