Imiquimod Topical Cream
The cream has been found to be an effective way of combating specific types of skin melanomas without the need for surgery. The type of skin melanoma frequently afflicts chronically sun-exposed skin that mutates the skin cells enough to go malignant. Known to be the earliest form of skin melanoma, or the non-invasive form of the skin disease. The progression of the melanoma-in-situ to more aggressive lentigo maligna melanoma normally takes between ten to fifteen years, during which the dangers of extreme sunburn from childhood makes itself known in adult life. The cream, should it be proved in further studies to be effective should provide a form of treatment that would halt the progression of the skin cancer to the more invasive form that requires surgery to remove and usually recurs.
Such innovative treatment is preferred due to its non-invasive nature that allows less trauma on the person and body. Extensive cases normally require repetitive surgery that produces life-impacting scars so the use of the topical cream may end the need for such procedures. More studies are underway to determine the true benefits of the product which can only be established through extensive research spanning a few years.
